Artist: Lane Blair

Returning to my art saved me. I had left the studio during a time when family responsibilities overwhelmed me. I felt compelled to put their needs above my own. Yet with no escape, I was drowning under the pressure to fulfill my role. Bravely, selfishly I staked a claim to take time to make art. This was a vital choice to feel replenished and inspired. It ultimately allowed me to better fulfill my responsibilities to self and others.
Painting is my favorite escape, mine alone. In my studio no one needs me. Standing in front of a canvas immersed in swirls of color and pattern, I feel free. The physical world seems to fade and I am somehow, for a moment, existing in the everywhere and the everywhen, connected to a force greater than me. Connected to what exactly I do not know, but in these moments, I believe that I may be in the midst of knowing the unknowable, experiencing the smallest grasp of the vast connection to the whole universe. My paintings are innate expressions of my soul and I do not worry how others judge my creations. I am in it for the joy. Art is the foil to life’s demands. I will forever balance the needs of others with my passion to paint. This is a portrait of my sister Abi.
